Microsoft is revolutionizing webcam usage in Windows 11 by lifting a long-standing restriction that limited webcam access to one app at a time. Historically, Windows’ video capture APIs and hardware limitations meant that only one application could utilize the webcam at any given moment. This often resulted in user frustration, especially in an era where online meetings and video calls have become essential.
The latest preview builds of Windows 11 24H2 introduce “multi-app camera” support, allowing multiple video apps to access the webcam simultaneously. This new feature eliminates the need to close one app before using the camera in another, significantly enhancing user convenience. However, to use this feature, users will need to enable it manually. Once enabled, camera settings such as brightness will be controlled centrally from a dedicated settings page.
In addition to the multi-app camera feature, Microsoft is also rolling out improvements for audio handling, where multiple apps can now use the microphone and speaker concurrently. Furthermore, a new camera troubleshooting feature is being introduced, and Microsoft is reportedly testing AI integration for the camera.
While these features are currently available in Insider previews, the exact timeline for a public release remains uncertain. Microsoft’s ongoing updates promise a more versatile and user-friendly camera experience in the near future.
