Meta Platforms has announced it will begin using public posts from Facebook and Instagram to train its AI models in the UK. The decision comes after a pause in the region due to regulatory concerns. Over the coming months, Meta will use public content shared by adult users, including photos, captions, and comments, for training its generative AI models. However, the company has clarified that private messages and data from users under 18 will not be included.
This move follows a mid-June decision by Meta to delay launching its AI models in Europe after the Irish privacy regulator and Britain’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) raised concerns about privacy and transparency. In response, Meta made several adjustments to its approach, allowing UK users to easily object to their data being used for AI training and extending the timeframe for objections. Users will begin receiving in-app notifications next week explaining the company’s data usage policies and providing instructions on how to opt out.
Meta emphasized that the pause allowed the company to work closely with the ICO and address regulatory feedback. The company now believes it is well-positioned to bring its AI-driven products to the UK much sooner. This resumption marks a significant step in Meta’s efforts to advance its AI capabilities while navigating strict privacy regulations.
Meta’s decision comes amid ongoing scrutiny from privacy advocates, including the advocacy group NOYB, which previously urged European regulators to block Meta’s use of social media content for AI training, citing inadequate compliance with EU privacy rules.
