Billionaire entrepreneur and founder of Neuralink, Elon Musk, has expressed his desire to give humans “superpower” in the near future. Elon Musk outlined the progress made so far and the future plans of the company. Neuralink’s implantable chip features tiny wires embedded with electrodes (sensors). These electrodes monitor brain activity and send electrical signals to control the brain.
Elon Musk believes that in the future, this technology will be available to individuals without medical conditions as well. He envisions that Neuralink technology will give humans cybernetic superpowers. Specifically, he plans to transplant humanoid robot limbs from Tesla onto patients who have lost their limbs and implant the chip in their brains. According to Musk, the process of implanting the Neuralink chip in the second person will begin in a few days. The procedure, originally planned for June, was delayed due to health issues with the patient. Neuralink has developed a chip that can be implanted in the human brain, featuring tiny wires with sensors. These sensors monitor brain activity and send signals to control the brain. Neuralink is also developing another chip. The second chip will have fewer electrodes compared to the first. Currently, the chip used by Neuralink has 64 threads with 16 electrodes. The new device will have 128 threads and 8 electrodes.
Additionally, the new chip’s bandwidth will double, making it theoretically more powerful than the first chip. The company aims to implant chips in thousands of patients within the next few years. Initially, not everyone will be able to get the chip implanted, Musk clarified. Initially, Neuralink will focus on helping patients with paralysis or neurological problems by implanting the chip. The first person to receive a Neuralink chip was Noland Arbaugh, who got the implant in January. Noland has reported improvements in his condition since the procedure. Musk believes that in the future, healthy people will also be able to use this technology. He thinks Neuralink can give humans cybernetic abilities, such as robotic limbs from Tesla controlled by the brain chip. The second person to get a Neuralink chip will have the procedure done in a few days. This was delayed from June due to the patient’s health issues. Neuralink is also working on a new chip with fewer sensors but more threads. The current chip has 64 threads and 16 sensors, while the new chip will have 128 threads and 8 sensors. The new chip will also have double the bandwidth, making it more powerful. Neuralink aims to implant chips in thousands of patients within a few years. Initially, not everyone will be able to get the chip, but Musk hopes that in the future, anyone who wants a chip can have one. Musk assured that the chip will not harm the brain. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had safety concerns, but they have now given permission for testing. With the Neuralink chip, people will be able to control electronic devices and perform digital tasks just by thinking.
